QuimperQuimper, a town in northwestern France situated in the region of Brittany, has been immersed in the pottery industry since the province was under the jurisdiction of the Roman Empire. The area was settled by Celts between the fifth and sixth century A.D. and although Brittany became a province of France in1532, the people maintained their Celtic heritage.Quimper, a town situated at the juncture of the Odet and the Steir rivers, is a name derived from the Gaelic word kemper meaning a convergence of rivers. Two other rivers, the Jet and the Frout, are near, but travel underground through the town. The towns’ proximity to the aforementioned rivers provided easy access to the natural resources required, rendering Quimper an ideal locale for pottery production and resulting in centuries of this practice. Three pottery manufactories were operating in the town of Quimper by the final decade of the nineteenth century, the Porquier factory, the De la Hubaudière factory and the Faïencerie d’Art Breton. Renowned for the tin-glazed earthenware, known in France as faïence, with hand-painted with scenes depicting life in the Brittany; the opaque tin glaze distinguishes faïence from other types of pottery. Although Quimper’s tradition of pottery production continues with several local factories producing faïence, Quimper produced after World War II is considered inferior. Modern techniques and machinery introduced after the Second World War resulted in a product that is less desirable to the Quimper connoisseur.
